Ask Seek Knock
Ask and it will be given to you…
seek and you will find…
knock and the door will be opened to you.
Matthew 7:7
Jesus spoke such poetry while delivering the sermon on the mount. He used simple words to convey a deeply powerful message because he wanted all who were listening to hear him. I wonder how many truly listened? Are we listening?
For everyone who asks receives…
the one who seeks finds…
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matthew 7:8
This reach is a short one because it’s not my words that are needed, but more so the sincere reminder to ask, to seek, to knock. For those of you who have crafted resolutions for the new year, I would love to encourage you to pray over those resolutions and lay them before the Father. You may have an idea of what you desire, but what you truly need is a more pressing matter in the eyes of the one who made you.
For those of you who don’t know where to even begin with your life…too much seems to be slipping through the cracks for you to even begin a “to-do” list…I would love to encourage you to seek the kingdom. When you seek His kingdom, with all that is within you, the “what next” becomes quite clear.
And for those of you who are ready to draw near to your Father in Heaven, oh you need only to be still and knock. No matter where you sit or for however long you have sat there…the door will be opened, but you must knock first.
The start of a new year is exciting and wonderful and teeming with possibility. But nothing will be worthwhile and lasting if done apart from Jesus. You may have a strong start…but the well will run dry, the burnout will set in, and you will find yourself counting down to the next new year…hoping for more.
The more you hope for doesn’t rest in 2025 anymore than it did in 2024. The more you hope for is waiting for you to ask…waiting for you to seek…waiting for you to knock. Our beloved Father in Heaven paints a masterpiece across the skies to mark each new day — He is not confined by time or space — He gives us a new with every sunrise, what we choose to do with such a gift is in our hands.
Lasting, beautiful, authentic change happens when we choose to reach for our God, our Maker, our Lord, Savior and King rather than lean on our own understanding of how things should be. And eventually the reaching for Him will not be because you want change, it will be because you have changed and simply desire Him above anything else.
May 2025 be the year we ask Him for what we desire and trust Him to provide what is needed. May this be the year we truly seek His kingdom rather than the ways of this world. May this be the year we knock and find the arms of our ever so faithful Father.
In closing, I would love for us to turn to Psalm 23, words written by King David. We read in scripture over and over again when David is faced with something new, be it good or bad, he turns to God. David was a man who asked God what to do — even when the world shouted suggestions and praises to him. David was a man who sought the Lord and His Kingdom — rather than be blinded by the ways of the world. David knocked, and we read powerful stories of how God responded to him.
And through it all, the asking - the seeking - the knocking, David was known most for how he praised God. David danced before the Lord because he adored Him. May we dance into and through this new year, all for the Lord.
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
